Rabo (out of his case): A mixed media project from my 3D design class. He is named and partially designed after Rabo Karabekian from Kurt Vonnegut’s novel, Bluebeard. He lost one eye and is also an artist (not an abstract expressionist painter, a musician). I sculpted him out of clay, using crudely developed techniques that I learned in beginning ceramics, fired him and painted him gouache (because I’m horribly inexperienced with glazes and was pressed for time), and mounted him in an old sewing machine case (which I had removed the machine from). I removed the old light from the sewing machine and mounted it onto the case, just above some holes I drilled in order to allow light into the case when the cover is on. To view the inside, I cut a hole and mounted an old Polaroid lens to the side of the case, using JB weld and crafted an accordion for Rabo out of the remaining parts of the old Polaroid.
I made this for a class last fall. I had so much fun building him, and I’m really bummed that I have no more classes geared toward spacial arts that I’ll be taking for my major. I’ll probably continue ceramics classes at community college because it’s so cheap, however, there’s a mixed media ceramic sculpture class that I’m itching to take, so I might just cram it into my schedule.
